Roll call was answered by "Your Favorite Quilt Pattern." The Block of the Month Winner was Nita Billman.

Nancy is starting a Hot Pad of the Month Club. This will be held the first Monday of each Month. Kits will be available: $6.00 for each kit, which includes everything needed to make one pot pad. Contact Nancy if want a kit.

The March meeting will be a work night starting at 5:30 pm. Each member is to bring one 10 1/2 " block made from summer colors. We will be putting these together to make the Flag Day Quilt. Each member is also encouraged to make items for sale at the Flag Day booth. W will have a short business meeting that night at 7 pm.
A new Block Swap for batik fabric squares is being planned. Orientation is March 13 at 6 pm at the Bin.

We had an auction for the program. Members brought material, books, magazines, kits, and trims to sell. The bidding was spirited and everyone enjoyed the evening. Proceeds will got the guild treasury.

Colton Kessler was the auctioneer for our first auction fund-raiser. Colton is Nancy's grandson.

Mary Shields assisted with the auction by giving us descriptions of the items for sale.

Tammy Goodyear models a Nascar Lamp Shade that she purchased at the auction. The Lamp Shade was part of a package deal that included sewing supplies.

We enjoyed show and tell from Arlene McKinney, Vera Cramer, Peggy Wintjen, and Carolyn Green.

Next month will be a Quilter's Auction. Bring items from your stash that you want to sell. Proceeds go to the Guild. Items to bring: UFO's, Material, Books, Magazines, Threads, and Trim.

The fifth Monday project in January will be a Portfolio cover.

Nancy is offering a Drunkard's Path Quilt class. Orientation is January 17 at 6:00-7:00 pm. The cost of the class is $30, which includes the Accuquilt Go and die. Contact Nancy at Quiltersbin1399@gmail.com if you are interested.

On March 9, Donna Lynn Thomas will be coming to do a trunk show and color theory class. The cost is $5. It will be held at the Quilter's Bin at 6:00 pm.
The Donna Lyn Thomas Workshop will be on March 10 from 10:00 - 3:30. The cost is $35 for guild members and $45 for non-members.

The Flag Day committee is asking for 10-½ inch block for the Flag Day Quilt. It must be in summer colors. The block will be 10 inch finished. It is due at the March meeting, which will be a work night.

Red Cross of Parsons, KS

The guild donates quilts to the Parsons, KS, Red Cross Chapter and invited Darlene Tower to speak to the group. Darlene spoke about what the Parsons Chapter does for Labette County and accepted another donation of quilts from the guild.

Recycled Items Challenge

Guild members were presented the challenge to create a functional or decorative item with recycled items. The items were judged at our May meeting by an outside judge. Here are the two winners:

Elsie Vail won in the Functional category with her handy kitchen tool. Here is what she had to say about her recycled item- "This is one of my handiest kitchen tools. Years ago I had a hand mixer with this as the beater. The motor ceased to work and I kept the beater. For a long time I used it without the wooden knob on the top. Then I go the bright idea of using the knob. I use it to mash numerous things like hard boiled eggs, a potato or two, bananas and other fruits."

Quilt Raffle

Guild members are selling $1 raffle tickets for chances to win this beautiful Red-White-Blue Quilt. The winner will be drawn at noon at Altamont Flag Day on June 11th, 2011.

Block of the Month

Peggy Reynolds was the winner of the May BOM challenge.

Peggy Reynolds will be in charge of the BOM challenge for this year. We will be making a Patriotic Sampler that measures 80x98 . The June BOM is a Star block, shown below. Each participating member will need to make 7 Star blocks and bring them to the June meeting.

Spring Tea

The Itchin' for Stitchin' guild held their annual Spring Tea at the April meeting. The Spring Tea committee did a wonderful job with the decorations and food!

Button, Button, Who's Got the Button?

Martha Flanagan, Cherokee County Extension Family and Consumer Sciences Agent, presented a program on buttons. Guild members were able to view and learn about historical buttons from all over the world made of fabric, metal, glass, ceramic, enamel, natural materials, and plastic.

Spring Tea

The guild will have their annual Spring Tea at the April meeting. Martha Flanagan, county extension agent from Columbus, KS, will present a program on buttons. Bring any antique or collectible buttons, if you have them. The Spring Tea committee suggests you dress up by wearing a hat and encourages you to bring a guest. The meal will be provided by the committee.

Recycled Items Challenge

Guild President, Carolyn Green, issued a challenge to all guild members for the May meeting: create a functional or decorative item using recycled materials. You may enter both categories and and there will be an outside judge for the challenge. (These items can also be entered into the Labette County Fair this summer!)

BOM

Becky Hellwig won the drawing for the March BOM. There will be no block for April due to the Spring Tea. The next project, a bargello flag, will be due in May. You may pick up the instructions for this project at the Quilter's Bin.

Labette County Fair

The Labette County Fair will be held July 23-July 30, 2011. The fair will be celebrating it's 100th birthday! Our goal is to have 100 entries from our guild for the fair. If you have never participated in our county fair, this would be a great time to start. Pages 10-18 have open class Family and Consumer Science categories, but the public can enter any open class category.

Program

Peggy Reynolds presented the January program. She demonstrated how to make table runners and table placemats out of border or striped fabric.

Flag Day Committee

The Flag Day committee is asking members to make patriotic (red, white and blue) 9 inch blocks (9 inch cut) and bring them to the February meeting. The blocks will be assembled at the March meeting. Here are some links for block patterns to inspire you. No cream fabrics, please.

5th Monday Project

Nancy Kessler will hold a 5th Monday Project on January 31st at the Quilter's Bin. She'll be teaching how to make a 'Snap Bag'. You will need 2 coordinating fat quarters of fabric, as well as fusible fleece interfacing, and a piece of 3/4" tape measure.

October 2010 Quilt Guild Meeting

Program

Charlie Davis, and his wife, Dorothy, were our special guests this month. Charlie owned and operated his own upholstery shop in Parsons for many years before it was destroyed by a fire. Charlie and his wife then operated a mobile concessions stand from state to state at state and county fairs and other events from which they sold cinnamon rolls and other food items.

During this time, Charlie decided to try his hand at embroidery and quilting after watching his wife work on her own projects during breaks and down times. He took a class and read books to learn how to get started. Charlie's first quilt features an embroidered fan design with a flying geese border and he's started a second quilt that consists of hexagons and diamonds. His quilts are beautiful and the guild enjoyed Charlie's presentation.

April 2010 Guild Meeting - Spring Tea

The Altamont Itchin' for Stitchin' Guild held their annual spring tea during the April meeting. The spring tea committee did a wonderful job with the beautiful decorations and door prizes. Guild members brought covered dishes and the food was enjoyed by all!

Nita Billman shared a short program with the guild. She showed a bag of tangled yarn and read a short story that she had written about it.

Tangled Yarn by Nita Billman

Life is a series of strings that intertwine with other peoples lives and if we were to try and untangle the strings there would be many hours and years spent trying to figure out how to untangle those strings.

Once I had several skeins of yarn that I wanted to freshen up and I thought that if I would put them in a bag and put them in the dryer for a short time that would do the trick. I didn't quite have the correct bag so I thought if I put the yarn in a pillowcase and tied the pillowcase shut and put all that in the dryer that would freshen up the yarn. When I opened the dryer there was the yarn in the dryer tub with the pillowcase tangled among all the strings of the yarn.

I finally got the pillow case out of the strings without cutting anything. This is the goal (not to cut the strings). After several attempts, I got a small piece of the string out and into a ball. It has been quite sometime since I have been working on this project and today it dawned on me this is like life. You cannot undo things that have gone astray in a short time. You must put some effort into the project to accomplish what it is you are trying to undo. Sometimes there is no way to undo what is already done. This is why it is important to be sure the string that is your life will not become tangled with someone else's string and then someone else's that will cause you grief in your string of life. So we all should choose carefully where we leave our string and how it is tangles with someone else's string.

Block of the Month Challenge

The final challenge has been issued for our current BOM challenge - Put your quilt together! Nancy Kessler showed her quilt top and told participating BOM members to bring their quilt top to the May guild meeting.

Quilt Trunk Show Featuring Darcy Ashton

Darcy Ashton of Oklahoma City will hold a trunk show in Altamont, KS, on May 21, 2010, at the First Baptist Church (400 S. Wabash) beginning at 6:00pm. Cost is 2 Fat Quarters of 100% cotton quilting fabric. There will be a drawing for some of these fat quarters later in the evening and refreshments will be served afterwards. March 2010 Guild Meeting

5th Monday Project

Nancy Kessler will be teaching a '5th Monday Project on Monday, March 29, at the Quilter's Bin.

The project is by Lazy Girl and is called Maggy - two different sized pouches. The cost of the

class is $8 (this is for the pattern) and you will also need to bring the following- two coordinating

10 inch squares of fabric, thread for top stitching, fusible batting for the big pouch and fusible

interfacing for the small one. If you plan to take the class, please tell Nancy Kessler by March 20th.

Donation Quilts

For those that would like to help work on making donation quilts, a group will be meeting on April 17th from 9-3. Bring a covered dish to share for lunch.

Twilling Class

Arlene McKinney will be teaching a Twilling class on March 11th from 5-9pm and on March 27 from 10am - 3pm at the Quilter's Bin. Both classes are the same- you may choose the date that works best for you. Please bring a covered dish if you come to the March 11th class.

Beginner Applique Class

Darcy Ashton will be coming to the Quilter's Bin on May 22nd from 10am - 4pm to teach a beginner's applique class. The cost is $25. Please contact Peggy Reynolds to sign up.

Altamont Flag Day

Altamont Flag Day is June 12, 2010. Our guild is making a quilt to auction off and our next day to work on it is Monday March 8th from 6-8pm at the Quilter's Bin. If you can, please bring red, off white and blue fabric.

July 2009 Itchin' for Stitchin' Guild Meeting

Julie Jack was a guest and the program presenter at the July meeting. Julie said that if she had to title her program, it would be, 'Things We Leave Undone'. She lost her mother this past year and shared about the fabric and sewing projects her mother left behind. Julie has enjoyed going through her mother's projects and taking time to finish them and reflect on past times.

Julie shared how to make a rug using double knit fabric and she also shared several other of her mother's projects that she has taken time to finish. The guild members loved her double knit rugs! The program was greatly enjoyed!!

Julie uses a ruler and a compass to mark her rug backing.

August Meeting

The August Itchin' for Stitchin' Guild meeting will be held at the FACS room at the Labette County High School.

Sewing and Quilting Expo Trip

The Labette County Extension Office is sponsering a trip to the Sewing and Quilting Expo in Kansas City on October 23rd. The cost is $10 at the door. If you are interested in attending, contact Nancy Kessler. quiltersbin1399@gmail.com

Quilter's Bin Closed

The Quilter's Bin will be closed on August 3rd and 10th.

RaNae Merrill

Quilt designer, author and teacher, RaNae Merrill, will be with the Altamont Itchin' for Stitchin' guild on September 17th, 2009. RaNae will teach a class during the day and have a trunk show in the evening. The class and trunk show are open to the public and there is a fee. Rita Foster presented a program on feed sacks and how they were used to make quilts, clothing and even bedding. It was a very interesting program and she shared items that she and her family used when she was a child. Here is a link that tells more about the history of the feed sack.

The Itchin' for Stitchin' Guild held their annual Spring Tea at the April meeting. The Blockheads, from Ottawa, KS, were the special guests and provided a fabulous trunk show. The Blockheads are a group of six ladies that make quilts together throughout the year. They decide on a project and then meet once a month over dinner to discuss their project and exchange quilt blocks. The presentation was greatly enjoyed by everyone.

February 2009 Highlights

Peggy Reynolds presented a program on Hardanger Embroidery. She shared that one time when she was on vacation, she and her family had stopped in Lindsborg, KS. Lindsborg is also known as 'Little Sweden' - it's a Swedish settlement and the people in the town have worked to maintain it's heritage. Peggy went into a craft shop and discovered a section of needle craft books on Hardanger Embroidery. She was very intriuged by it and decided to give it a try. The program was enjoyed by all. Peggy does beautiful work and did a great job describing the process of Hardanger Embroidery.

Block of the Month Project

The current Block of the Month project is called 'Stars Ablaze'. For the February guild meeting, participating members were to bring in three completed quilt blocks. 6 total quilt blocks are due for the March meeting.

The Itchin' for Stitchin' guild had their Christmas party at the December meeting. The Christmas committee was in charge of the program and had a fun game for the members as they exchanged Christmas gifts. Gloria Eaton provided the beautiful table decorations. Here are a few pictures from the party:

Nancy Kessler was the winner for the BOM project and she received a fat quarter. Ruth Lavender was the overall winner for the Block of the Month Project and she won the miniature quilt!!

Happy 90th Birthday to Elsie Vail!

There will be a birthday celebration for Elsie Vail on Sunday Dec. 14th from 2-4pm at the Altamont Senior Center.

All Night Sew

There will be an all-night sew at the Quilter's Bin on Friday January 2nd beginning at 4:30pm. You will need to bring: a dish to share, sweatshirt 1 size larger than you wear, 6-7 coordinating fat quarters, 1/2 - 1 yard coordinating fabric to add length. You can also bring your own project to work on if you don't want to make the sweatshirt.

YoYo Quilt Group

There will be an organizational meeting on Monday, January 12th at 6pm at the Quilter's Bin for those interested in forming a group and making a YoYo quilt.

5th Monday Project

Nancy will be teaching a 5th Monday Project on December 29th at the Quilter's Bin. The project is a sewing bag and you will need the following supplies:

Four, 1/4 yard coordinating fabrics
Warm and Natural batting. Approx. 25"x45"
thread for stitching
1 yard beaded trim

Program

Nancy Kessler presented a program on Paintstiks. Paintstiks are oil based paints that resemble a jumbo crayon. Nancy demonstrated how to add texture to fabric with rubbings. You can use Paintstiks on almost any type of fabric, including cotton, silk, synthetics, suede, leather, etc. They can also be used on walls, metals, glass, etc.

Nancy explained to let your fabric dry once you've used your Paintstiks and then to heat set your project with an iron.

Donation Quilt Update

Peggy Reynolds presented lap quilts to the Presbytarian Manor on October 16th. Jan Strait, marketing director, and Cindy Tapphorn, interim executive director, accepted the quilts on behalf of the Presbytarian Manor.

Project of the Month

Nancy K. was the winner of the Project of the Month drawing and got to choose a Fat Quarter. The current project of the month will be concluded in December and each member must bring their completed wall hanging to be eligible for the final drawing. The winner of the final drawing will receive a wall hanging made by Gloria Eaton.

Program

Nita Billman was in charge of this month's program. Nita gave each person a list of scrambled quilting words and the group was given 5 minutes to try and figure them out. The game was enjoyed by all!

Donation Quilts

Several Guild members have been working hard on making lap robes to donate to the Presbytarian Manor in Parsons, KS. So far, over 20 lap robes have been donated!

Quilt Expo

A van will be leaving the Labette County Extension Office at 7am to go to the Quilt Expo on October 24th. The cost is $20. Please contact Nancy Kessler for more information.

5th Monday Sewing Project

Nancy Kessler teaches a fun sewing project every month that has a 5th Monday. The project for September was a 'Grab Bag'. Several ladies came to make a bag and they had a lot of fun!

Shopping Bag Story Challenge

A couple of months ago, Nancy Kessler had a 5th Monday class on how to make a shopping bag. She also presented a challenge to those that made the shopping bag. The challenge was to write a story about how you used your shopping bag. After all the stories were turned in, a very special guest read over them and chose a winner. The special guest was Patricia Pepe (she was in the area and came to visit) and the winner of the story challenge was Mary Ann Vanderford! Mary Ann won a $10 gift certificate to use at the Quilter's Bin. Congratulations, Mary Ann!

The above quilt was made by Nita Billmans daughter, Rhonda Heston. The name of the quilt is 'Waiting'. On the back of the quilt was the following:

Waiting

"This quilt was inspired by the vast amount of snow
received during the winter of 2008. The fairgrounds
appeared to be "waiting" for summer, for the fair,
and the visitors.

The pieced block is called the Iowa Star.

My huband, Steve Heston, grew up at the Iowa State
Fair and wanted to share the Fair experience with
me. What better way than to put the buildings and
the grounds into a quilt?"

Program

Sarah Gilreath presented the September program. Sarah spoke about Heather Bailey, a designer of fabric, sewing patterns and paper craft supplies. Heather offers free patterns on her blog and Sarah demonstrated how to make Heather's Square Deal pincushion.

Block of the Month Project

For the last step in the table runner project, participating guild members were to put the borders on their project. Each person that brought a finished top would have their name put in a drawing for an embroidered table runner made by Gloria Eaton.

Next Block of the Month Project

The next BOM project is a wall hanging that features the 'Twist and Shout' block. Gloria Eaton showed a sample of this project. You can view it below. Those that wish to participate in this new BOM project must bring 6 finished blocks to the October meeting. Project instructions will be included in the next guild newsletter.

Announcements

Every Monday in September at the Quilter's Bin will be used to work on the lap robes for Presbyterian Manor. The requested lap robe size is 36" x 48".

The guild placed an entry in the Labette County Fair's Celebrity/Character Scarecrow contest and won 1st place.

Nancy Kessler will be teaching a class on this bag at the September 5th Monday Sew. These are called Grab Bags and you will need two, half yard pieces of fabric to make one bag. (One for the outside and one for the lining.) You will also need thread to match the outside fabric because there is top stitching. There is no cost for this class.

We were happy to have Kayla Crabtree with us at our September meeting. She is the daughter of Nancy Kessler. Kayla and her husband are currently living in Japan.

Program

Ronnie Bringle presented a program on three dimensional needle felting. She shared about the history of needle felting, the tools used for felting and gave a demonstration of needle felting. Ronnie is offering a three session needle felting class beginning on October 18th, 2008. (location to be announced). The fee of $65 includes three 4 hour classes plus all materials and tools to complete 4 progressive projects. A non-refundable deposit of $30 is due September 18th. Block of the Month Project

Tammy G. was the winner of August's BOM drawing. To be eligible for the drawing, members were to complete the next step in the table runner project; make the 9 patch blockes and the strips around the center squares. The finished table runner top must be brought to the September meeting in order to be eligible for the next drawing. Stay tuned for pictures of this project!!

Announcements

The 3-Corner Shop Hop has been set for September 4-7 , 2008. Each person will be responsible for getting themselves to the shops in Parsons and Independence. A group will leave Saturday morning to go to the remaining 10 shops.

The Sewing Expo is being sponsored by the Extension Office and people will be going on October 24th. Each person is responsible for two meals and gas. Please contact Nancy Kessler if you're interested in the Sewing Expo or 3-Corner Shop Hop.

Program

Kathy Evans demonstrated an Applique technique out of the most recent Fons and Porter magazine.

The August program will be presented by Ronnie Bringle of McCune, KS. Ronnie will present a program on three dimensional needle felting. She does amazing work!! You can view a slideshow of some of her felting projects here.

Block of the Month Project

Nita Billman was the winner of July's BOM project and received a fat quarter. To be eligible for the drawing, guild members were required to make three, 8" blocks and bring them to the guild meeting.

The next step in the BOM project is to make the 9 patch blockes and the strips around the center squares. Members may bring this next finished step to the August meeting and have their names placed in the drawing.

Patricia Pepe visited our guild this past April and presented a trunk show and workshop. One of our very own guild members has two quilts featured on Patricia's website- Janice Hentzen!! You can view Janice's quilts here.

The Labette County Fair is July 28-August 2. There are several Opoen Class events that you can enter. Anyone can enter in these classes.

Our guild is participating in the Scarecrow Competition. You can read more about the competion here.
